Running with Purpose, Circling for Change

The Heritage All Day 5k was inspired by a prayer practice from a book called The Circle Maker, where the idea of circling the things that are most important to us can create meaningful change. In this case, we combined this prayer practice with a unique 5k format, where we run and walk circles around our community, both literally and spiritually, to support children and families in foster care.

Each lap is more than a step forward; it's a prayer, a pledge, and a promise to our community’s most vulnerable.

In 2023, we introduced a pasta dinner the night before the race, partnering with Three Brothers Pizza—a local favorite that shares our commitment to supporting children in foster care. This dinner serves as an additional fundraiser for our foster care ministries, offering guests a delicious catered meal and the opportunity to hear powerful testimonies and experiences from those involved in the foster care community.

The ministries that benefit from the All Day 5k focus on handing the church to the next generation of children and youth while supporting their families -- building a future filled with hope. This includes the children and youth programs at Heritage UMC, the Growing Place Preschool, Foster-to-Foster, and community service programs through the United Methodist Conference.

We believe in this model so deeply, and trust that our investments in our children will change the world! Every dollar pledged, every meal ticket purchased, and every lap run of our community will help to build a community where our community can gather, grow, and love!

Ministry Highlight

One of the incredible ministries that benefits from the All Day 5k is called Foster-to-Foster. It is a free thrift store available to all registered foster and adoptive families. It is run by volunteers and hosted at Heritage UMC. It began with a church member who started collecting donations in her garage for foster parents whom she knew, and now serves hundreds of shoppers each year, 4 days a week, and is supported by an incredible team of volunteers.

Foster-to-Foster is a growing name in the foster and adoptive community in Tampa Bay, making items like clothes, diapers, toys, games, strollers, and much more available to these families for free. It is our joy to be able to support Foster-to-Foster and help them continue their great work!

We aren't just running for medals or personal bests; we’re running for kids who deserve safe homes, for parents who need a hand, and for neighbors who may never have known these needs existed.

In the past 4 years, our runners and walkers have circled our community 864 times. We have served over 240 plates of pasta, and in doing so, we've raised $44,229. This year, we're setting our sights even higher.
